Australia’s Slowly Slowly usher in a new era with single Sacrosaint. By all accounts pushing the envelope with their songwriting and trying their hardest to capture their thoughts and feelings surrounding the state of our world today.
Ben shares, “‘Sacrosaint’ is about the things that we’ve taken for granted, the things that have been sacrosanct in the past, and how we always think they’re going to be there. In that laziness, you’re watching the pillars of what holds up your life and society erode. The good in the world felt like it was disappearing. It felt like a big warning sign – if we stop watering those things that are so important for our happiness, it’s over. So, it felt like a warning.”

The title “sacrosanct” means something considered too important or sacred to be interfered with. Slowly Slowly turn that idea on its head. What if the things we believe are untouchable aren’t? What if the pillars holding everything together are already beginning to crack?
The lyrics are wonderfully strange. Chernobyl, The Fly, an atom, Dublin, eight billion lonely people. It’s a collage of personal memories, sci-fi imagery, existential dread and global anxiety, all hurtling towards the same conclusion: we’re running out of time. That line becomes impossible to ignore.
Musically, Sacrosaint is huge. It builds and builds around Ben Stewart’s increasingly frantic vocal performance, but underneath all the noise there’s something surprisingly human. The repeated plea to “stop” and the idea of finding “a better way to detonate it” feels less like surrender and more like a last-second realisation that destruction isn’t the only option.
What I like most about Sacrosaint is that for all its talk of collapse, catastrophe and running out of time, it ultimately feels like a song about paying attention. Notice the signs. Listen to the voice underneath the noise. Take care of the things that matter before you realise they’re gone. It’s loud, anxious, strange and genuinely exciting. A warning flare disguised as a rock song, and a pretty compelling introduction to whatever Slowly Slowly have planned for this next chapter.
