Dead Letter Circus
While You Wait
Release Date: Out Now
Review by Peyton Bernhardt
Singles are tricky; the impression that their several minutes create can make or break the hype for an upcoming album and equally, a band’s activities overall. In that way, succeeding in the delicate process of a single’s execution is crucial. Luckily, Aussie alt-rockers Dead Letter Circus have carried it out without a (distinguishable) hitch with their new track, ‘While You Wait’.
From its ominous initial build up to its steady and catchy delivery, this belter is jam-packed with everything that you’d want from a Dead Letter Circus release. The brash tune whips itself into a punchy existence that enables it to embody a sassy, take-no-prisoners personality, appropriately supported by its edgy vocals. The lyrical focus isn’t particularly airy fairy, but nor is it too heavy. It’s not too specific to relate to, meaning that it triumphantly translates into an accessible tune for any alt-rock enjoyer.
Interestingly, those aren’t the song’s only virtues. Its instruments work together to intriguingly craft something cohesive. Disregarding the word’s corporate overuse, potent drums and standout guitars construct a synergy that produces a sum superior to the addition of the track’s components. There’s no nagging criticism at the back of your mind that the mixing has imbalanced the volume of either element; these instruments complement the vocals, but also work alongside them, as opposed to letting one or the other take the spotlight.
If you’ve never checked out Dead Letter Circus, this is the track inviting you to do so. To be frank, it’s a banger. Whether or not it foreshadows a correspondingly impressive third studio album is yet to be seen, but just in case it doesn’t, and ‘it wasn’t what I thought it would be’ begins to get thrown around like ‘I was into it before it was cool’, appreciate it while you can.
