[NEWS] THE POOR Working For Charity

Share This:

One of Australia’s leading rock bands, The Poor, play this Saturday night at the Currumbin Creek Tavern on the Gold Coast as part of the global Rockin for West Papua arts and music festival.

The initiative, which is presented by Rize of the Morning Star, is being held in Melbourne, Brisbane, Darwin, Perth, Lismore and the Gold Coast, as well as last weekend in Sydney, Newcastle and Edinburgh in the U.K.

The foundation aims to raise awareness for the plight of West Papuans and their human rights abuses. West Papuan music is outlawed by the Indonesian military, with the leader of the ULMWP declaring “Indonesia have tanks and guns – West Papuans have only guitars. Music is the only weapon we need for freedom.”

Skenie, vocalist for The Poor, got behind the concept stating “it’s not right what is happening over there and if we can raise money, awareness, and support through our music then we have contributed in some small way. This is a worthwhile cause and even if you can’t make it to any of the shows please go to Rize the Morning Stars web page and see how you can make a difference.”
Other bands performing at Currumbin are Wartooth and Paging Jimi, while Kold Creature and Monster Fodder headline five bands playing at Chardons Corner Hotel in Brisbane on the same night.
Lismore has a show on Friday night while Darwin is also hosting an event on Saturday night with Melbourne’s turn on Sunday. Perth is on October 29.

Tickets are limited so contact the venues early to secure entry.
