Riding The Wave With PISTONFIST

Interview by CJ Nash

Brisbane hard rock outfit PistonFist have gone from strength to strength in 2022, playing in pretty much every state of Australia except Western Australia.

The boys continue their march this weekend with a leading slot at Frankie’s Pizza in Sydney alongside Kaosis for a Sunday afternoon show not to be missed.

Frontman Geoff O’Leary caught up with CJ Nash for a candid chat, starting with their recent new single, Resent The Day.

“We’re really, really happy with Resent The Day,” O’Leary enthused. “It’s kicking along just nicely. This one and Rise Up have been kicking along nicely, so we’re really happy. Big thanks to everybody that’s had a listen.”

PistonFist have undergone a couple of personnel changes recently, with drummer Damo just starting to settle in to his role.

“He is crushing it that young man,” O’Leary smiled. “Super happy to be working with him. He knows his shit back to front, and he knows guitars better than I do! He has his own little studio, he knows recording, he’s a very switched on musician. He definitely… he’s passionate. He’s very particular and… he was telling us he goes to sleep, and he can play the song through from start to finish in his head and that’s how he writes. It’s crazy shit.”

Talk soon turns to PistonFist’s next single, which should be out in the next couple of months.

“We’ve got a brand new single, Dig In,” O’Leary offered. “It’s… we’re looking at maybe a month, six weeks for release date, we haven’t nailed that down yet. I’ve found that with CD Baby and getting things locked in and doing a little bit of promo and then nailing a release date when I know it’s gonna happen is a very smart thing. The last couple have been a little bit touch and go, so I wanna make sure all our ducks are lined up this time. It’s a bit more… I’m gonna say it’s got a little bit more balls. It’s a bit less rock and roll and a bit more metal. Again, it’s one of the first songs I think we wrote with Damo and him being the machine that he is has kicked it in the butt a little bit. We’ve got our new guy Dunga who is in this video. He’s filled in really nicely and is doing a great job. We all feel really at home working with Dunga, he’s just too easy. He’s one of the boys.”

In the full interview, Geoffro talks about the new music in greater detail, upcoming shows, their exciting future and more.
