Pure Aggression: MIKE SCHLEIBAUM From DARKEST HOUR Talks SUFFER DIVINE

If you like your metal fast, furious, and dipped in carnage, then you already know that Washington, D.C. melodic death metal/metalcore pioneers Darkest Hour have been holding down the frontline for over three decades. These legends have consistently defied trends, outlasted the copycats, and repeatedly shown the heavy music world exactly how to fuse the raw aggression of American hardcore with the razor-sharp melodic precision of Scandinavian death metal. They are certified lifers of the scene, but just when you thought they might take a breath after 2024’s massive Perpetual Terminal, instead Darkest Hour have gone and unlocked a whole new level of sonic violence.

On October 30, Darkest Hour dropped their highly anticipated eleventh studio album, Suffer Divine, via MNRK Heavy. Produced by the legendary Mark Lewis—the mastermind behind some of the heaviest albums from Whitechapel and The Black Dahlia Murder—this record is a snarling beast. It doesn’t just expand on their legacy; it completely obliterates expectations. From the moment Gods Of Decay kicks in with its thrash-fueled intensity and old-testament antagonism, it is completely obvious that Darkest Hour are not here to play it safe. Suffer Divine takes all that raw material of human suffering, addiction, and nostalgia and channels it into a massive sonic furnace.

Ahead of the album’s release, HEAVY had the pleasure of catching up with the riff-master himself, founding guitarist and all-round legend Mike Schleibaum, to talk all things Suffer Divine. We got deep into the process, what it means to be a fan of Darkest Hour, and why this album feels like a triumphant testament to accountability and survival. Mike was in fine form, sharing how the band keeps their creative fire burning hotter than ever after thirty years in the game and much more.
