PRIVATE FUNCTION Beat The System For New Promotional Campaign

Last week Australia’s pub rock heroes Private Function announced the release of their forthcoming album, 370HSSV 0773H, and shared that the first 3000 copies of the record would feature a world-first scratchable album cover, with three Australiana-themed icons sitting underneath scratchie panels.

Only one record sleeve would feature three identical icons, and the winning fan would receive $2999 from the band, a signed test pressing of the record, and the winner’s face printed on every album repress, forever.

The band also announced that due to the Lotteries Act in South Australia, which dictates any ‘scratch and win’ promotion would require a permit regardless of the prize pool value, the new album was unable to be sold and distributed within the state.

When asked about the ban on the weekend, South Australia’s Liquor and Gambling Commissioner Dini Soulio told Adelaide’s The Advertiser that: “There are strict requirements under the Lotteries Act in South Australia for anyone wanting to offer any form of instant win scratchie promotion to ensure consumers are protected. However, in this instance I’m sure we can find a practical solution.”

That practical solution came today, in the form of a full exemption for Private Function to conduct and advertise an ‘Unlawful Lottery’.

In a statement, the band said: “Today is a great day for rock and roll. We thank the South Australian government for working with us and allowing the sales of our new record in your fine state. In an era of political uncertainty, one thing is certain – rock and roll will always prevail.”
