Mountain Wizard Death Cult return with their most epic work yet in the form of the 8+ minute post-metal journey that is Orbital.
Taking a different approach from the previous release Initiation, which was relentless in nature, their latest offering takes the listener on a sonic voyage into the void and out of their body, choosing the path of atmosphere, texture and bludgeoning rhythm to convey the band’s aural and emotional heaviness.
Their latest video is a visual feast that feels more like a short film rather than what you would call a ‘video clip’ given that the viewer is kept fixated on the carefully crafted shots that are sometimes still and quiet that balance so perfectly with hypnotic chaos.
When the time came to begin creating the visual elements of Orbital, MWDC chose the route of collaboration and interpretation of their work from an outside perspective (much like the name of the track suggests). This came to fruition through a relationship with Chris Elder of Haus Party (Vids for Northlane, Thy Art is Murder, Polaris), whom would go on to manifest the audio through visuals. As vocalist JJ put it best:
“MWDC are continually working in collaboration with other artists and creative talents seeking out other perspectives and interpretations of the music we create. We have so many amazingly talented and brilliant people in our lives that make beautiful art, we want them to express what they encounter with the music with minimal influence from us directly -, exactly like how we approached this video with Chris, we gave him an open brief and creative control and honestly the results speak for themselves”
MWDC have also recently started the Orbital Australian Tour, with Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast in their sights this weekend.
