Brisbane based hard rock / alt metal act KRAVE have returned from a brief hiatus with a new drummer and a new single that showcases the possibilities that can occur when a group of mad-scientist musicians gel. Shapeshifting is a full-tilt barrage of emotion that explores the dark tricks that the mind can play, and how regaining control sometimes means mortal confrontation.
From a dreamy intro, the haunting voice of Siana Davis wanders through a verse that eventually locks in bolt-tight with Ryan White’s ripping guitar before opening out and running to the blue sky of a very cool chorus. Lachlan Shirley’s power drumming steps it up for another round with the shapeshifter in verse two. The feel becomes urgent and menacing with the lofty chorus of …. Lies! Lies! Lies! …. far more confronting the second time through.
The breakdown at the end brutally slams the door shut, with the listener wondering how the Shapeshifting villain, now fully exposed, could possibly survive.
Shapeshifting represents the continuing evolution of KRAVE. This is an excellent follow-up from 2021’s critically acclaimed Puppet. As a band, KRAVE are unafraid to go dark and unafraid to go deep. Shapeshifting reveals more layers on repeated listens. If recent performances are anything to go by, Shapeshifting will be one of those build-up songs that punters will recognise instantly and completely lose it for!
