The air was thick with excitement this Wednesday as fresh faced fans, elder-emos and their children unite in line for the highly anticipated first show of Pierce The Veil’s I Cant Hear You Australian tour. If the traffic jams and mobs of people walking in hordes of stiped knee high socks and converse are any indication of how the night is going to be, I too am ecstatic and kind of feel like I’m in high school again… see mum, it wasn’t a phase.
The night began with Jack Kays bringing a haunting yet inviting safe space for a heart to bleed, laugh, love and cry all at the same time. Frontman Jack has this crazy ability to blend pop-punk with soulful, deep, gritty heartfelt song writing. I was definitely taken aback with this in particular as it’s rare that someone can mix such heavy themes in such a tongue in cheek playful way. If you haven’t yet heard of Jack Kays, you 100% should add them to your Sunday playlist.
Movements hit the stage thick & fast picking up the energy as fans push closer and closer to the front. The crowd got thicker and started to fill the sold out space and you could feel the energy building as fans moshed, crowd surfed and screamed along to Movements. If they didn’t know of the band before the show they definitely do now. Movements came, saw and conquered as they brought their beautiful angst and driving force they are known for to the smiling, screaming and in some cases happy crying faces of Brisbane and proved exactly why they belong in front of thousands of screaming fans.
As it was a school night the crowd eagerly awaited the main event. The stage goes black, the smoke machines blast as José Alfredo Jiménez’s song El Rey wakes us all up and the lights illuminate the sea of eager faces. The crowd goes mental! The immediate energy and driving bass tone hits my chest like a raging bull. The ground is almost shaking as screams echo almost as loud as the band itself. It truly was a spectacle.
I don’t envy photographers – I could count on one hand the number of times the band stood still for longer than .05 of a second. You could tell they put everything into every show, and this was no exception. The setlist was thought out methodically and I can’t think of a single song that we didn’t get to hear from our must-have list.
From the first note you could tell the entire show was thought out and meticulously built to bring all the theatrics and excitement possible to the stage and fans. At one point the stage lights were flashing through the hundreds of filming phones and from where I was standing the screens made it look like the crowd had a bright white heartbeat, I was blown away.
Pierce The Veil without a doubt poured their life-force into Brisbane’s beating heart this hot Wednesday night and we thank you.
