NOFX Interview

Share This:

When HEAVY catches up with Eric Melvin from the legendary NOFX he is a man on a journey – driving with his Australian born wife, Sarah, to San Francisco. My interview ends up becoming a chat with both them as they pull into a gas station and order food. My chat with Eric revolves around the band and Australia while Sarah and swap stories about Melbourne. As the chat goes on we talk about how excited NOFX are for their upcoming Australian tour.

“The whole thing with Download is funny that it was offered to us,” he says as he puts windscreen wiper fluid in his car. “We were actually planning on coming to Australia either this year or next year already. Sometimes (playing at a big festival like Download) it is great because of the other bands that are on the bill. We don’t get to see them for a long time but we know a lot of the bands that on are the tour, so that means that we get to connect with some body that we haven’t seen for awhile. We don’t only get to connect with people that we haven’t seen for a while but we also get to make new friends…. we are a fairly sociable group of guys.”

Eric is also quick to admit that a festival is not just a big catch-up session though for him it is also about the music as well. “I love to go and check out other bands whether I have seen them play live before or not,” he says laughing. “Sometimes I go and see bands that I know and sometimes I’ll just go and see a band that I have been really curious about. I mean my day at a festival show is primarily about taking care of myself so that I’m ready for our show, so I make sure that I eat, that I eat right so that I get myself ready for my show but if there is a band playing that I am curious about then I will just go and see them, but I have to make sure that it doesn’t get in the way of me getting ready for the show. We actually became really good friends with the bands from The Prodigy when we were in Australia about ten years ago and we still run into them and they still remember us… so that was a friendship we made in Australia… how cool is that? Thank you guys.”

So if you want to be like NOFX and head a long to Download and make some friends get onto that right now and buy your tickets… and remember that you can hear the full NOFX interview above.
