Somebody phone up DC Comics and tell them to replace Zack Snyder on their director’s roster with David Ayer. While Snyder’s work on Batman vs Superman was passable it is blown completely out of the water by the work that Ayer (‘Fury’) has done with Suicide Squad – a film that is guaranteed to impress all the comic book fans out there.

As he did with his amazing film End Of Watch Ayer brings a strange sense of realism to Suicide Squad. It also raises the very real question of is it okay to use hardcore lifer prisoners to do dirty work that puts their lives in danger. See Suicide Squad revolves around a morally questionable plan put forth to the CIA by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis – Prisoners) who believes that in the wake of Superman’s death an elite squad needs to be put together to protect Earth in case the next super-being to arrive wants to do evil. The result is a team of the most notorious criminals known to man, people like gun-for- hire hit man Deadshot (Will Smith – Men In Black) and the very psychotic but sexual Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie –Wolf Of Wall Street). Waller’s plan is to use the suicide squad in deadly mission with blackmail and explosive chips implanted in their necks to keep them in order. What she doesn’t count on are the human emotions of her squad leader Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman –RoboCop) coming into play when he has to battle the love of his life June Moone/Enchantress (Cara Delevingne – Paper Towns) and The Joker (Jared Leto – Dallas Buyer’s Club) wanting to ‘rescue’ his girlfriend.

The fact that Ayer makes a film that centres around a witch wanting to destroy the Earth be some realistic with human emotion is nothing short of spectacular. Somehow amidst all the impressive CGI battle scenes Ayer not only brings the military element to the fore but also has the audience feeling for cold-blooded killers and a mutant, Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje – Thor: The Dark World) and perfectly understanding why they are so nervous about having to face their mortality and separation from loved ones.

Perhaps the most amazing thing about Suicide Squad are the performances of some of its key cast. Will Smith puts some of his recent horrible movies behind him and reminds us all he is an actor who can put in a dramatic performance in an action blockbuster, Joel Kinnaman does likewise while Margot Robbie adds another tick to her career with a truly memorable performance as Harley Quinn.

With dodgy Aussie accents (I’m looking at you Boomerang) and limited screen time for The Joker aside there is a lot to love about Suicide Squad. The realism, an amazing soundtrack (I rushed out and bought straight away) and great acting performances make Suicide Squad better than the recent DC films… oh and you’ll want to stick around for the final credits as well (wink wink).
