However audiences try to define Sydney’s Mountain Wizard Death Cult, there’s no denying the impact their genre-bending brand of bone-crushing and hypnotising metal has in the flesh and on record.
With recent signings to Beats Cartel and Blighttown Records, MWDC are set to unleash their latest sonic assault on the senses, Initiation, on March 31.
First appearing in early 2019, MWDC quickly built a reputation as one of the most encapsulating and devastating acts in the Sydney metal scene. By way of introduction, their moody, anguished debut single Eye Of The Sun set the tone before follow-up EP Thrones of Putrid Light saw the band explore their doomier progressive tendencies, while 2021’s single Wretch revealed MWDC at their most intense and visceral, appearing on their first split vinyl with Astrodeath entitled The Wretched Invasion and also receiving airplay on Triple J’s The Racket.
Band guitarist Chris Chaplin says the upcoming single and East Coast cross Tasman Tour for Initiation feels like a culmination of the journey the four members have been through together as a band… channeling their frustrations, influences and aggression to bring the listener into the unique world that is Mountain Wizard Death Cult.
