Review by Cameron Cooper

Supergroups are all the rage at the moment. However, while mainstream metal figures are happy to throw their collective hats into the ring, a group of more underground musicians such as Mirror is far more surprising.

Boasting current and former members of Electric Wizard, Repulsion and Satan’s Wrath, the international band have a refreshingly authentic, old school metal vibe that draws parallels to King Crimson, Sir Lord Baltimore and Thin Lizzy. Thunderous, melodic bass lines and bombastically vintage drums are topped off with Blackmore-tinged guitars and the operatic-yet-sublime vocal work of Jimmy Mavromatis.

Admittedly, listeners might be tempted to lump Mirror in with many of the retro-doom bands kicking around at first, but a second spin reveals a breadth of ponderous subtitles the band’s contemporaries never reach. The band manage to belt out a few shorter bangers, but truly shine when given room to breathe on the slightly longer tunes Madness & Magik and Elysian. Worth a listen for fans of 60s hard rock and 70s metal alike.
