With the countdown to Necrosonic Festival at The Mansfield Tavern in Brisbane on August 31 now on, HEAVY thought it appropriate to introduce you to the bands playing on the day, two at a time, starting from today until the day of the show.

Conjured by one of the dark architects behind the legendary Overcranked, Inferno and Dead of Winter Festivals, Necrosonic heralds a day filled with unrelenting brutality and the heaviest, most sinister sounds that the underworld has to offer, some even returning from the dead for the ritual.

Hosting 30 bands across three stages over 12 hours, Necrosonic Festival promises to satiate even the heaviest of hungers. Today, we introduce you to Freedom Of Fear and The Black Swamp.

FREEDOM OF FEAR

Freedom Of Fear are a blackened tech death metal band from Adelaide, South Australia.

A rising force in the Australian metal industry, the band have shared the stage withworld-renownedd acts such as Fleshgod Apocalypse, Jinjer, Gatecreeper, Obscura and In Death. The band’s critically acclaimed latest album Carpathia features Hannes Grossmann of Necrophagist on drums.

THE BLACK SWAMP

Beginning as a live act in 2012, The Black Swamp summon sludge and stoner laced riffs reminiscent of the 70’s and 90’s. The four piece slither between Iommi infused doom and Vinnie Paul groove, throwing out a brand of metal made for nodding heads and emptying beers.

Over the last 10+ years, they’ve peddled 3 independent releases, pushing their brand around the country on their own national tours, various festival appearances as well as earning coveted support slots with international acts such as Beastwars, Black Label Society, Bongzilla, Crowbar, Eyehategod, Hellyeah and Stöner to name a few.

The band’s off-kilter approach to their artwork brought them Music Video of the Year at the Gold Coast Music Awards, and they’ve had a sludge ridden stout brewed in their name, partnered with Bacchus Brewing Co.

The Black Swamp will be hitting the studio in 2024 to build on from where the highly regarded EP Witches left off, with a new LP of riff-centric heavy music. Ultimately, live is where the Swamp thrives.

May thy riffs runneth over!
