MAX WALKER Talks QUEEN & COUNTRY AUSTRALIA

You have to give it to Australians… we know how to have a good time. Victorians get a public holiday just because the AFL Grand Final is the next day (it’s not even on the same day), we have a boat race on a river that seldom has water and if it runs or can race we will probably place a bet on it… cockroach racing anyone? They are all true events, but have you ever heard of the Beef Week Queen of Australia competition before? No well you know you are about to with the new documentary series Queen & Country Australia.

To find out even more about this series which is hosted by US travel writer Jessie Archer we caught up with co-creator Mark ‘Max’ Walker who has worked on projects including Australian Story, Who Do You Think You Are and Grand Design Australia.

“I know it is a very weird concept. Who would want to be Beef Week Queen?” says Walker laughing when I ask him exactly what Beef Week Queen of Australia is. “The way I know about it is because I grew up in a town very close to where it happens. I grew up in the northern river area of country New South Wales and just down the road, about an hour or an hour and half drive, is a town called Casino, it is known for its beef industry. It has an abattoir there and many, many beef farms. I guess the point is that these towns right across regional Australia often celebrate something that is unique to that town, so my town was all about bananas so every year there would be four, five or six young girls from around the town who would compete to be the Banana Queen and Casino hosts the Beef Week Festival so therefore the young ladies from that region compete against each other to be the Beef Week Queen. That is how I found out about it and still to this down it is running… and it is as strong as ever.”
