Under The Bridge London 12th April 2017

The Magpie Salute have set-up in residency at Under The Bridge for 4 nights, bringing their unique style of good old-fashioned rock and roll swagger to the UK.

Formed from the ashes of The Black Crowes, Rich Robinson, Marc Ford and Sven Pipien have put together a 10 piece band that is just perfect in every way. Top quality musicians all ready to take on the world by storm.

Tonight was the first of four shows, each one promising to be unique in its setlist and yet able to showcase the talents of all on the stage.

With a setlist comprising of mainly Black Crowes, Hookah Brown, and Marc Ford numbers the audience was in for a real treat. Talking to the patiently waiting crowd, it was clear that people had traveled from far and wide (Australia, USA, and Holland to name but a few) to be a part of this incredible experience… and we were not to be disappointed.

Opening with the Black Crowes number “Sting Me” the band set the tone for the rest of the night. Pure, unadulterated rock and roll. The audience began singing and never stopped until the final words of the closing song “Jealous Again”

Rich Robinson and Marc Ford traded guitar licks with ease and vocalist John Hogg handled the songs with ease. Sven Pipien showed us just how good a bass player should be and provided a solid rhythm section alongside Matt Slocum (keyboards) and drummer Joe Magistro. Backup singers Adrien Reju, Charity White and Katrine Ottosen added not only their vocal talents but also percussion and some solid blues harp.

Many have criticised the band for being nothing more than a Black Crowes cover band and that Hogg could never fill the shoes of Chris Robinson. Well, this reviewer for one did not see it that way at all. Between them, Rich Robinson and Marc Ford have a wealth of material to choose, from both their solo careers and together as The Crowes. Why not bring this into play whilst we await the release of their album, and breathe new life into them with the super talented band on show.

For 2 hours we were truly lost in the music. A 22 song setlist, each one as good as the next, making very difficult to pick standout tunes. Picking out a few, “Shalimar Dreams”, “Bad Luck Blue Eyes Goodbye”, Led Zeppelin cover, “Your Time is Gonna Come” and the amazing rendition of “Thorn in My Pride” were my favourites.

Tonight we witnessed an unforgettable experience, my only regret was not being able to stay for the other 3 shows.
