THE LAZYS ‘Tropical Hazards’

Share This:

Formed in 2006, the Lazys have been paying their dues in true rock and roll style all over Australia for many years now. Having relocated to Canada they have released an LP which follows up on their 2015 Canadian Top 10 singles ‘Shake It Like You Mean It’ and ‘Black Rebel’.

In the words of their press release:

‘It’s a high-octane, hell-raising rock ‘n roll ride, that was produced by Ian D’Sa (Billy Talent) and Eric Ratz (Big Wreck, Danko Jones, Monster Truck). 10 belters that are unabashedly outrageous, packed with classic songs about wild nights, pretty girls, heartbreak, and resilience, but are never cliché. ‘

To be fair that is indeed an apt description of the LP. Opening track ‘Nothing But Trouble’ sets the scene in true Aussie Rock style, paying homage to the likes of AC/DC and The Angels. And so the LP continues in that vain all the way through. This is one of those LP’s that is a darn good listen and will have you returning over an over again.

The high-voltage riffage continues on tracks like ‘Can’t Kill the Truth’, ‘Take Back the Town’ and ‘Louder Than Youth’, a song about defiance towards teachers who abuse authority, directly inspired by Leon’s growing up in the private Catholic school system. Then there’s the wink-wink, nudge-nudge of ‘Half Mast Blues’, a rollicking tale of a pirate and his…well, listen and you’ll figure it out…

However, the stand out track has to be ‘Young Modern Lightning‘. This homage to a band that has been on the road and all the emotional and physical baggage that goes with this life. The songwriting and musicality that has been honed in the past 10 years comes to the fore .. a truly great song.

This LP is thoroughly recommended by HeavyMag. I good listen from start to finish if you are a fan blues-tinged hard rock, with more than a nod to the great masters of the past.
