The Swedish psych rock band, Blues Pills, teamed up with German stoner rockers, Kadavar, to play a handful of shows around Australia that saw them perform at Melbourne’s own Cherryfest and this, the second show of their two-night stand at the Northcote Social Club.
Melbourne locals, Sun God Replica, opened the night with their heavy riffs and jams making sure that the as yet small crowd prepared themselves for a night of good times and no hassles. While they played to a somewhat empty room, the small yet appreciative crowd showed them love regardless.
River of Snakes followed and dished out a barrage of tunes that crossed back and forth from Sonic Youth to the likes of a more punk rock sound from the Seattle grunge era. A nice mix that could have sounded outdated by anyone else but this trio do it justice. Good solid songs that are sometimes about cats.
Reviews were still circulating about the previous night’s show highlighting that both Blues Pills and Kadavar were not to be missed and from the moment Blues Pills took to the stage, they exceeded all expectations. To be honest, it’s not all a mystery as to why these cats are suddenly blowing up in Europe and elsewhere. Front woman, Elin Larsson, has a voice so strong and powerful that it sent shivers down my spine. Mixing the likes of Blue Cheer, Frijid Pink and Janis Joplin, their songs mashed a nice blend of groove and trippy vibes. These guys (and girl) are set to explode as the next big thing and thankfully, those in attendance will be able to gladly say “I was there”. Yes, you were and it was awesome.
The German power trio of Kadavar came on stage to much applause and got things underway with a barrage of heavy riffs and psych jams. Lead guitarist and vocalist, Lupus Lindemann, plays like he has the soul of Hendrix running through his hands. Each riff delivered unrelentlessly while drummer, Tiger, is without a doubt one of the most energetic drummers playing on the live circuit today. All eyes were fixated on his beats and flawless drum fills keeping the rhythm section tight and precise. There was no doubt that Kadavar’s continued drive and endless touring schedule has kept the band so connected together that their hour long set was met with an abundance of praise and cheers from the receptive audience.
Both bands, Blues Pills and Kadavar, gave the audiences a night to remember. They came, we saw, they kicked our asses and we enjoyed every minute of it. Let’s hope they both return to our shores sooner rather than later.
