JUDAS PRIEST Deliver Some Fire Power

Share This:

You could forgive rock legends Judas Priest if now was the time that chose to live off their laurels and perhaps just release a Greatest Hits CD every now and then. However when HEAVY Mag recently spoke to Richie Faulkner we very quickly realised that this is a band that will never be like that.

Sure the band released their first album way back in 1974 but now as they prepare to release their latest album, Firepower, you can tell that there is a fire that still burns deep in this band and they are more than ready to keep going.

“We really just wanted to get together and make an album that was better – sounded better, had better songs and have better performances,” says Faulkner talking about the inspirations behind Firepower. “I think we have done that every time we have recorded an album to be honest, if you didn’t want t something to be better there would be no point in doing another one. So me, Rob and Glenn went in and put our song ideas on the table and start matching our ideas together and crafting the songs together and it just went from there really. When you go into a writing session like that you go in with nothing and then all of a sudden it starts to take shape and you have this living breathing thing.”

As we talk it sounds like Faulkner is very excited about the album coming out so I ask whether before an album drops whether he finds himself just excited or also nervous. “It is a mixture of both,” he says thinking. “I know I do and I think Rob and Glenn who are also the writers are more the veterans of it so they have seen it before. But I get nervous, really nervous, right up until a week before the release and I am thinking ‘Is it right?’, “Does the guitars sound right?’ ‘Are the songs good?’. You just never know because some of the worst received albums in history were good ideas at the time, but people put them out and they weren’t well received and everybody wants their album to be well received because you put a lot of work into it and yeah so there is some anxiety and nerves but it is al because you want it to be the best and you want it to be liked by people… so it is worry for good reasons.”

You can hear the rest of our Judas Priest interview above and Firepower is out now.
