Former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted suffered whiplash of a different kind over the weekend.
During a set performed at the Highline Ballroom in New York City with his new namesake project, Newsted, an over eager fan leapt onto the stage while the band performed the Metallica track Whiplash. The fan then attempted a stage dive into the crowd but miscalculated and dragged the bassist along with him as they both tumbled to the ground.
Security immediately jumped in and escorted the fan out of the venue while a visibly disorientated Newsted got back on stage and told the crowd “You know, no matter how many shows I’ve done, that just happened for the first time. …I trust my brothers here to take care of it. Anyone get a good look at that motherfucker? Don’t kill him just bruise him up a bit.”
As a band, this is Newsted’s first ever tour and a new album has just been completed. The band was formed late last year and is made up of of Newsted on bass duties and lead vocals, former Staind guitarist Mike Mushok, Jesus Mendez Jr on drums and Jessie Farnsworth on guitar and backing vocals. A four track EP titled Metal was released earlier this year through Newsted’s own label Chophouse Records.
