[INTERVIEW] BLACK RHENO

Share This:

A Black Rheno show is full of heavy pounding drum rhythms, low tuned sonic riffage and frontman Ryan Miller’s eclectic and unique vocal style. Check out the video and tour dates – are at the bottom of the page – after you read this Q&A.

Could you describe your music in three words for those who haven’t heard the band before?

Stoner, Sludge & Groove!

How did it all start out for the band?

Well, we all met at our vocalist‘ Ryan Miller’s rehearsal/recording studio (Housefox Studios). I needed a sweet joint to practice the drums having recently moved to the area, and our guitarist Nano came here from Europe somewhere… looking for some like-minded fellas as passionate about this shit as he is, which was Ryan and I. We had a jam, it was gravy and here we are!!!

Who are the band influenced by musically?

If you have heard the ep then obviously a lot of different bands/styles….. the standouts I would say are Clutch, Mastodon, Snot, Red Fang, Kyuss & King Parrot.

Are there any inspirations from the outside world in the music and are there any issues that shit the band to tears beside burning toast?

The only inspiration outside the world of music would just have to be general motherfuckers that get off their anus and get shit done! It ain’t easy, but hard work is everything if you want to get yourself somewhere… And we are chock full of that man!

I think what shits us the most, other than wet towels that are select individuals complaining about the live music scene dying… It’s not dead. There’s a shit tonne of amazing local bands out there playing near you every week, you bastards just need to get yo ass up and pay some cash to support them!

Is there any music you listened to while writing the tracks that inspired the final result?

Not really, we are generally listening to music all the time, whatever comes out when we jam and write is just what happens…

Tell us the story behind the hilarious video for No Time For Numb Nuts, the pineapple and working with Matt Young.

Firstly it was an absolute honour working with Dan Farmer from Farmwalker Films and Matty; those guys are fucking genius!!

As for the video, we played a show in Canberra on Friday night, got back to the hotel and slept for two hours and started the journey to Melbourne where we met up with Dan and Matty at a truck stop on the Hume Highway. Dan like a champion rocked up in his sweet combi full of props like trolleys, banana chairs and of course a fucking pineapple… So we then spent the rest of the day having a ball filming at a few different locations and brainstorming different ideas and BAM, a video.

Are there any funny stories behind any of the lyrics?

Well not overly, pretty much just have no time for dickheads… But with extra cheese, it ain’t easy being cheesy!

If the band were to support an International act which would it be?

Shit, where do I start?? My personal goal would be to support The Dillinger Escape Plan, seen then a bunch of times and its pretty intense…

Black Rehno is soon to set out on an extensive tour from Brisbane, supporting King Parrot along the way in Batemans Bay and wrapping it up opening for Don Fernando in Victoria, the band must be looking forward to that?

Yeah definitely, it all kicks off soon on the 10th November in Brisbane! We are pretty keen to be playing with King Parrot in Batemans Bay; they always put on a crazy show! Don Fernando as well are a great bunch of guys, having played with them recently at The Tote with the Cosmic Psychos was awesome!

It may be too early to ask but is there any planning as to when the band will start writing music for a full-length record?

Pretty much already started! Nano is always coming up with filthy riffs, so we are always putting it all together. All going well, maybe late next year for another release!

Finally, is there anything you would like to say to your fans, with what to expect at one of your live shows coming up the next two months and is there anything you hope the listener gets out of your music besides partial ear loss at one of your shows?

Don’t forget to check us out on the upcoming “Let’s Start A Cult” EP Launch Tour! We will be all up and down the east coast, so there’re no excuses! Plenty of fuzz, loud ass drums and Miller running around screaming at your silly faces possibly with his pants down…
