Horror Stories with AENIMUS

Share This:

“It’s been a long time in the making”, agreed Seth Stone, bass player for Aenimus about their upcoming album Dreamcatcher, which is set for release February 22, “and I feel like this record really has something for everybody: metal fans and non-metal fans alike. If you’re just into good music and horror movies or novels and have an open mind I think you’ll enjoy it”.
Dreamcatcher is a concept album with a difference. Rather than follow an idea or scenario, it instead focusses on a selection of novels and movies from a master of the horror genre.
“The concept is based off four different horror novels by Steven King“, Stone explained. “We chose four classic stories – It, The Shining, Hannibal and The Silence of the Lambs series, and The Dead Zone. We took those concepts and basically retold them from different characters perspectives; trying to go through how these characters felt throughout the stories and why they were doing the things they were doing and we tried to tell them in a way where people could relate in their day to day lives. Even if they don’t know what those stories are about they might be able to identify with some of the characters we’re writing about. Musically we wrote the lyrics and tried to match these emotions that lyrically we were expressing so it really ended up being a really diverse album which is why I say it has something for everybody because it’s not your typical angry metal album the whole way through or forty minutes of crazy metal. There’s laid back parts, there’s melancholy parts, there are uplifting sounding sections and then there’s your metal and super dark, super heavy, technical stuff. We kind of just went all over the board because that’s what the concept called for and we really wanted to do that justice”.
In the full interview, Seth explains how Aenimus wrote music to reflect the moods they were hoping to achieve, the chronological order of the songs, challenges faced in writing a concept such as this and recreating someone else’s work and vision, debut album Transcend Reality and more.
