One of the hottest bands out of Brisbane out of the moment is heavy psych trio Zong. They are currently on tour and are stopping off in Melbourne for Holy Smoke 2018 as part of their Transmissions tour. HEAVY Mag caught up with Michael Grinstead from Zong to find out what audiences can expect on this tour.
“We’ve been together for roughly two years now,” says Grinstead as we take a in-depth look at the band. “The other two guys had been jamming for a little bit and they came up to me from the local scene and I just started jamming with them. We all came together and now we have recorded our first full length album which happened about a year after we formed.”
With so many great bands coming out of Brisbane at the moment I just had to ask Grinstead what the scene is like at the moment. “It is a really cool feel,” he says. “Everyone is just so supportive of each other. It is not competitive at all and there are so many cool venues and stuff. It feels like everybody is friends and we all hang out together and we all have fun and it is great. I guess just everybody is really supportive of each other and they all make an effort to get to know each other and they make an effort to come out and see up-and-coming bands. They also make the effort to come out and see the shows and you go to see your friend’s gigs. Maybe it is because the city is a little bit smaller than places like Melbourne… but yeah I’m not sure if that has anything to do with it.”
“We got contacted by Ant months ago,” he explains when I ask how Zong got involved with Holy Smoke 2018. “He asked if we were interested because he had come across us about a year ago on Facebook when we released our first album. We’re just really keen to play and check out all the bands… and I have heard so much about The Bendigo so I can’t wait to check that out as well. We also play Sydney on Friday night so Holy Smoke is part of the tour for us.”
