Hitting the road with KARNIVOOL

There is no doubt about it Karnivool are back. The sleeping giant seemed to be hibernation since the touring for Asymmetry which had been released way back in 2013. Then in 2018 that giant awakened and played sold out live shows before appearing at Unify.
Now the band are about to hit the road again and HEAVY Mag caught up with guitarist Mark ‘Hoss’ Hosking to find out what fans can expect from the album but also where the band are at with their so far untitled new album.

“Basically we love to play live,” says Hoss talking about what sparked the band to get back on the road again. “We will take any excuse to do it but yeah we seem really bad at getting the timing right. Basically we were working on some new material and as you probably know we have been working on a new album for a stupid amount of time, and it is starting to reach a point now where we can feel some real energy behind it and we wanted to build on that. And of course when you lift your head up from a recording you look up from the desk and look at the outside world and start to think what haven’t we been doing and that answer was ‘we haven’t toured for a long time.’ That last tour felt like it wasn’t long enough and we felt like we needed to do more and it felt like we really started to get our run on at the end of the tour… that is normally a sign.”

Hearing the passion in Hoss’s voice about touring I ask him what it is he enjoys about it so much. “I think for us recording is a work horse,” he explains. “And we do love that stuff to but it is just more of a painful love. With a live show there is a pain when you are creating something to go live but once that is done and once you are up there and playing it is just all reward and I think if any performer doesn’t feel that way then they need to start to question why they are performing. It is just a fun, energy receiving experience. You probably get more of a vibe and energy back from the crowd then you put out, it is a very selfish but it is a very rewarding feeling.”
