Greed Over Need With CHARLIE SEYMOUR-GRANT From RINSER

Share This:

With Gold Coast rockers Rinser set to drop their new track Greed, followed by an East Coast tour of Australia, HEAVY took the time to catch up with lead singer Charlie Seymour-Grant to find out more.

H: Tell us a bit about Rinser and your journey.

CSG: We formed back in 2019 as a group of mates wanting to put a new take on an existing band we had with new members bringing a heavier angle to things, Most of the time we’ve stuck around SE QLD playing, all being new Dads and all busy, but are ready to play further afield! There’s a bunch of rad bands in these parts.

We’ve supported bands such as Hands Like Houses (AU), Greenleaf (SE), 1000mods (GR), Psychedelic Porn Crumpets (AU), Yawning Man (USA) and Brant Bjork (USA), releasing track by track in the background along the way as well as signing to Beats Cartel. Keen now, to finish off this debut album and hit the road down South.

H: You’ve just dropped the single Living Dead, and we’ve heard a preview of the soon-to-be-released new track Greed. Big energy big riff tracks, does this vibe sum up the band?

CSG: I think big damn riffs are high on the list of things that sum this band up but it’s definitely not everything. We’ve got a few songs on the upcoming album which definitely steer away from that with a more introspective feel.

H: A lot of your songs have a political or anti-establishment theme? Is this something you’re conscious of in your writing?

CSG: It’s what feels right, it comes naturally when writing this stuff. I think it’s what the music itself calls for. It’s so easy and cathartic to express disdain for broken and disintegrating systems through art and music. It’s also the job of artists to be the storytellers of their time, and that’s all we’re really doing, just putting words to what we’re seeing.

H: What can people expect from a Rinser show?

CSG: The Big Bang haha. Ringing ears and sore necks that’ll last for a few days. Memories of a band that went balls to the wall, ripping phat riffs and had a damn good time while doing it. You’re set to hit the road on your first coastal tour, a while in the making. What are you looking forward to most? So psyched to be hitting this tour. The biggest thing for us is to break away and play some new places, meet some new crew and be stuck in a sweaty rv with each other haha.

We haven’t had the chance to play outside of the Northern NSW and SEQ, and we’re really keen to share our music with the Sydney and Wollongong crew. It’s gonna be fun.

H: What are some other bands, national or international, that the band draws inspiration from, and who should we be looking out for on the touring circuit?

CSG: We’re super inspired by the crew around here for sure (SEQ/northern NSW) bands like Emu, Mudwagon, Couch Wizard, Boing Boing, Radium Dolls, JB Paterson, The Lonesomes, FFMB to name a few. There’s such an unreal scene of musos and bands from around this whole area, and we’re super lucky to be a part of it all.

Inspirations outside of that are bands like Soundgarden, Rage Against the Machine, QOTSA, Crowbar and Down. The list could go for a while, so we’ll just leave it with those…

H: Top 3 tour tips.

CSG: The 3 Bags. Clothes bag, toiletries bag and the bags.
