Good Things Festival brought the goods to Brisbane yet again for 2025 with heavy weights like Tool, Lorna Shore, GWAR and Kublai Khan TX just to name a few.
We started our day in the blistering sun with Yours Truly, and the burn was worth every second of it. The uplifting energy and charisma being the perfect way to start the day and for those that missed out by being fashionably late, you FUCKING MISSED OUT.
With a quick shimmy to the right, we time walked over to the adjacent stage and waited in great anticipation for Scene Queen. A fairly new obsession of mine but an obsession nonetheless. I was expecting an awesome set, but it was so much more. Talk about having a crowd in the palm of your hand. Side note more bands should have twerkle pits very rarely do I have a safe environment to shake what my mother gave me, and I am so about it.
Speaking of rumps, Windwaker comes along just in time to save my pasty white one from 3rd degree burns, as I am now the colour of a cooked krustation. The tent stage was a welcome friend and so was Windwaker, holy shit!
We bounced around for a while catching snippets of different sets and stopping to ensure we were sufficiently hydrated at all times, until…
GWAR! FUCK YEAH GWAR.
Sadly, I missed the watermelon eating competition and frankly I still haven’t recovered mentally.
While hydrating and reapplying sunscreen I notice a hoard of hairy tattooed folk that look like me rushing towards the field, this can only mean one thing, The legends that are Machine Head are starting. Best join the headbanging conga line because I suspect I do not want to miss this. Turns out my suspicions were correct, they delivered in every way.
No matter what I did, I couldn’t convince my less insane friends to join me in the Kublai Khan pit. I later learned it was probably a good idea I went alone. I pushed my way in to a spot I thought was respectable/couldn’t make it any further as I realize the tent is overflowing from all sides and Kublai should have definitely been on a main stage.
They start, and the crowd turns into a zombie apocalypse movie, cramming as close as they can. I go from row 10 to row 3 in 1.3 seconds, and at this point have no say in what my body is doing. I was directly in front of Matt and in the median strip of crowd surf highway. The only notice I had that someone was coming was a full human on my head or toe jam being violently forced into my teeth, it was glorious. I became the self-appointed crowd surfer flinger and used my immense manly muscles to throw these miscreants to safety as the very handsome security caught and released them like football passing practice and the cycle continued like a hardcore merry-go-round. Easily the most intense pit I’ve ever been in, and I loved it.
Drenched in sweat and needing a sit down, it seems all the hydrating doesn’t help feet and studded belts to the head. I had a break for a minute, then cowboy walked with atomic chafe to catch the end of Weezer and the start of the all mighty Tool.
Weezer killed it, and I had no idea I knew so many of the lyrics.
The crowd was split between Tool and Lorna Shore. For the first time in years the field wasn’t packed to the rafters for the main time slot and as the thunderstorm rolled in from the horizon, Tool begins and the entire field shakes. It is everything you could have dreamed of and more. A bucket list moment ticked off.
Halfway through Tool I had to at least catch a bit of Lorna Shore, so I did my best crab impression and walk to the tent briskly. I immediately get PTSD. Scared for my life, I watched safely from the back. Holy shit, what a performance.
With that my tiny manchild brain couldn’t take any more excitement, it’s time to lick my wounds and go to bed a very happy fella.
