Developed by PlatinumGames and published by Square Enix, Nier: Automata is an action adventure RPG for PS4 and PC.

A sequel to the 2010 game “Nier” and a part of the Drakengard series Nier: Automata is set far in the future where humans have been driven off the earth by robotic invaders from another world. Forced to largely flee to the moon the human resistance have sent combat androids, known as the “YoRHa”, to fight this war and win back the earth. As the player you control several of these androids in their efforts to defeat the robotic invaders.

Having not played any of the previous games in the franchise I didn’t know quite what to expect from Nier: Automata. Through friends I knew that it was a sequel to Nier a somewhat lesser known JRPG from almost 10 years back but that was it.

The prologue itself blew me away. It honestly feels like you’re playing multiple different games all within the first 30 minutes as the game seamlessly shifts genres and styles sometimes just with the shifting of camera angles. At one point it’s a side scroller shoot em up, then it’s a platformer, then it’s a bullet hell game, then something akin to Starfox, then it’s a 3rd person hack and slash.

This isn’t even the main game yet as most of the rest of the time playing this game will be the more recognizable 3rd person RPG. However this opening really does serve as the first shocking moment in a game that will be constantly surprising you as it goes on.

I do have to also mention the difficulty of the prologue which serves as foreshadowing for the rest of the game. Die in the prologue and you’ll need to replay the entire thing again as there are no quick saves or continues. The way the main game itself handles saving and dying is something similar to that seen in Dark Souls and the like. You’re an android, your memories and abilities need to be uploaded if you wish to keep your progress. This means activating save points throughout the game world which will allow you to do so. If you die without saving you will go back to a previous saved point and need to backtrack, to retrieve any items, gold or upgrades you may have collected you will need to find and loot your previous physical body wherever you left it hopefully not “dying” again in the process.

The story is just amazing as well. Deep well developed characters and the way that Yoko Taro’s scenario plays out is something very unique to the video game medium. For example this game doesn’t just have one ending, it has 26! Now to be fair a lot of these are just various novelties (dying in the prologue is one, using your android’s self destruct ability while on board the YoRHa space station is another). But in something that reminded me of Undertale, the game isn’t really over when you finish it the first time. the game doesn’t so much have a New Game + option as it has an extension of the game from a different perspective. The game itself isn’t really over until your THIRD play through however while that might seem tedious I implore anyone interested to give it a shot as it’s in the third run through of the game that the strongest emotional moments are held.

I can’t say that I’ve played everything PlatinumGames have released but from what I have played it’s safe to say Nier: Automata is by far my favorite. The game is just such a unique experience unlike anything else I’ve played this year or on PS4 at all.

From its music, to its story, its characters and its gameplay Nier: Automata is a definite contender to be the game of the year for a lot of gamers out there. It’s well worth a buy and well worth the 40-60 hours you could easily put into it for the experience.
