For Today – Wake – Album Review

For Today
Wake
Nuclear Blast
Release Date: 2 October 2015
Review by Jeremy Edwards

Christian metalcore. It’s probably not a genre the majority of metalheads would have in their collection. For Today have been heavyweights in Christian metalcore since their beginning in 2005, but the release of their fifth album in early 2014, Fight The Silence saw the band make a move to focus on more political topics and they have continued their progression with their new record Wake.

Ryan Leitru’s clean vocals take a backseat on this album, with a lot more emphasis on Mattie Montgomery’s evolving guttural growls which feature in the majority of each track. Songs like Forced Into Fire and Hopeless Ambition are the best example of For Today’s transformation from metalcore into a much heavier melodic death metal sound.

From the opening track, No Truth, No Sacrifice you can tell these guys are on a mission. Whether it was a deliberate move to steer away from the religious vibe, or just an evolution of the band as musicians, they are certain to continue their rapid rise into the global metal scene.
