Finding Hope From Despair With OCEAN SLEEPER

Share This:

Gippsland heavy outfit Ocean Sleeper recently released their new EP Is It Better Feeling Nothing, taking listeners into a heavier, more personal side of the band than ever before.

After teasing fans with a look into the meatier direction with singles Forever Sinking and Your Love I’ll Never Need, Ocean Sleeper revealed the full package on August 19 and set out on a run of dates to promote the release shortly after.

Vocalist Karl Spiessl joined HEAVY late last week to chat about the release and tour.

“It’s been awesome,” he smiled when asked about the early response to the EP. “I think a lot of the songs are a bit of a shock factor to what people are used to us having, so it’s been interesting to see everyone a bit shocked and surprised and stoked with the direction of it all.”

When pressed on what that shock factor is, Spiessl elaborated further.

“I suppose for the most part, Ocean Sleeper is the easy listening metal; the heavy band that isn’t that heavy,” he measured, “but with this one we went all in to being heavy and the first song especially we wanted to make sure from the get-go that everyone knew that was how it was going to be. The first song was straight into a much heavier way than we’ve ever done.”

In the full interview, Karl talks more about the heavier direction of the EP, the meaning behind the title, the contrast between heavy and melodic in Ocean Sleeper’s music and finding the balance between the two, the current tour and what to expect and more.
