Explore the Obelisk with HYBRID NIGHTMARES

Australian band Hybrid Nightmares really announced themselves with their debut album Almagest. Since then the band have further established themselves with some great local gigs and recently were named to be touring internationally alongside Watain and Anaal Nathrakh. Now with the band about to drop their second album – titled Obelisk – HEAVY Mag caught up with drummer and band founder Adam Chapman to talk about what fans can expect from the new album.

“When we came from touring with our first album, Almagest, we decided that we wanted to do something a lot more down to earth,” explains Chapman. “Certainly something more down-to-earth than what we had done in the past. So we set about trying to write songs that were less connected than Almagest, we tried to write songs that could stand on their own. We wanted to experiment with something more heavier – some death metal elements rather than the large bass things that we had done with Almagest.”

I then ask whether that changed the way the band went around writing the tracks this time around. “We used to jam a lot for Almagest,” says Chapman. “One member would bring a song and we would jam with it for awhile, but with this one we all got into our music programs at home and just demos, demos and more demos. So I think we came to band practice with almost twenty different songs and I think that got us to be able to work out what we wanted to put out. We sat down as a group after our final demos and it was easy to tell what had been polished enough to continue with and what needed a lot more work.”
