DOWNGIRL Talk About Thrashville

Share This:

With Thrashville on this coming weekend, HEAVY sent out some Q&A questions to some of the local bands performing.

Today’s feature artist is Downgirl.

H: You are performing at Thrashville 2023 over September 8 and 9. On a scale of 1 to 10 how excited are you and why?

D: 10s across the board. We can’t wait to get out of town and have some solid time take a break from the city and catch up with each other and our other Aussie bands.

Thrashville is headlined by COG and Mammal, which of them are you most looking forward to sharing a stage with and why?

Oooft – What a hard choice! Both are great bands we are honestly equally looking forward to seeing. Both are iconic and bring their own unique sound and perspective. We’ll be at the front for both.

Of course, there are a host of other Australian bands on the line-up, which ones have you played with before?

We’ve played with a couple of these legends before including CIVIC. So excited to see them play too. See me in the pit when their song nuclear son gets played.

What can punters expect from your set?

A banquet of punk genre-bent good times and the ole Downgirl tom foolery, which can involve anything from pseudo drunken gymnastics to singing deep into a taxidermied ibis eyes.

Thrashville is held pretty much in the middle of nowhere. How good is it going to be, being at one with nature at a music festival with no neighbours to upset?

Amen. This is exactly what the doctor ordered. We can’t wait to throw our phones of aeroplane mode and get immersed in the long list of awesome bands Thrashville has in store for us.

The whole line-up is made up of Aussie bands. How important are festivals like this that don’t rely on International artists?

This is crucial. There is an endless supply of quality Australian bands who deserve a space of their own to feature their work. Glad Thrashville is supporting the local talent.

It’s a two-day event, what are your top 5 survival tips?

Our main survival tips are –

  • beer
  • whiskey
  • but also eat food and stay hydrated, check in with your mates, be safe and kind to others
  • more whiskey
  • wake up prepared with the following ingredients – water + Berocca + dissolvable aspirin

Tell us a bit more about your band.

Gadigal-based femme punk/grunge band made up of myself aka Alex, Kristen, Lou and Skarlett. We make a lot of noise and have bloody good time doing it.

What’s your most recent release and give us a link to it.

BOYS is our latest baby.

What song do you think your fans will want you to close your set with?

Hmm, we traditionally end our set with Malibu Stacy as it’s loud/quick and packs a long-lasting punch that is felt well after the set is finished. But who knows? Maybe we’ll sneak a new song in to end the set?

What song will you close your set with?

In reality, it will probably be our cover of Nancy Sinatra – “These boots are made for walking”. We always say we’ll never play it but when it gets to the end of the set – we are suckers for a sneaky cover.

At an event like this how much of a percentage is fun and personal enjoyment and how much is ‘work’?

Work? I hardly know her. Playing with Downgirl never feels like work (even though it involves a lot of it) – its always 100% fun.

Your tip for the best live sets over the whole weekend from 1 to 5.

Oh I can’t rate them from 1-5. But my top 5 to see will be due to the fact that I haven’t got the chance to see them yet and have heard amazing things are – Fungas, Boudicca, Private Wives, Miruthan and Dane Blacklock and the Preacher’s Daughter.
