If you’re not already aware of it, Melbourne is now home to not one, but two awesome flamenco metal bands, Citrus Jam and Malcura. Both acts are heavily influenced by metal music and uniquely incorporate the style into their soulful acoustic tunes.
Citrus Jam have made a name for themselves as the ultimate acoustic tropical pirate shred metal. Quite a mouthful, but it’s perfectly befitting to the band. Citrus Jam’s routes come from traditional metal bands such as Metallica, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest and have even been known to cover a few of these classics in the past, including Metallica’s Fade To Black and Iron Maiden’s Hallowed Be Thy Name. The usual Citrus Jam duo will be accompanied by Scorpius Pinchius on Violin adding an extra saucy layer to an already invigorating fold.
Whilst Citrus Jam have the traditional metal side of things covered, Malcura have more of a heavier, contemporary influence, drawing from bands such as Lamb Of God, Mastadon, Arch Enemy as well as our own Psycroptic. Malcura have been referred to as the bastard son of Rodrigo y Gabriela and Opeth, their music diligently displays this, interweaving melodies to create an eerie atmosphere all the while retaining the hooks and catchiness of Rodrigo y Gabriela. Malcura recently released their debut EP, appropriately titled Flamenco Metal
Catch both highly talented flamenco acts this coming Friday at Whole Lotta Love in East Brunswick
