Based out of frontman Olly Tooze’s vintage clothing shop in Brighton ‘Mammoth’, Creeping Jean’s new album Business Is Dead is an ode to the struggle to make ends meet for the shop, while also still having the means and time to be a musician, living life like a gang of charming wastrel throwbacks, breathing life into 60’s flavour rock’n’roll with a seaside spirit and good time groove.
Working away over a hot vintage garment rail, Creeping Jean know all about the vintage business. Their knowledge and hustle, which funded both their first album and this new record speaks to their commitment and dedication, both to the 60s and 70s and to making Creeping Jean work.
“Set me up with a whiskey, We’re in the red, Leave all the doors closed, Business is dead” sings Tooze.
He comments: “Business is dead – the album title came through the shop. It felt like since Covid, financially trying to run an independent business and a band at the same time was a big fight. The high street is a battleground. Greedy landlords and companies constantly taking money for anything and everything they could. It’s like they want the working-class folk off the high street – trying to shut my business dead. But we didn’t shut because we fought hard and strong. We kept the shop going and again raised the money to make another record that was bigger and bolder, and we believe you’ll love it!”
