Rising Australian outfit Yours Truly exploded out of the blocks with their massive debut album Self Care in 2020, earning an ARIA nomination for Best Hard Rock/Heavy album and backing it up with an engaging live performance that belied their youth.
From the outset, the band have tackled contentious subject matter, with Self Care being written after open discussions between all four band members relating to mental health.
Originally slated as a three-song companion piece to Self Care titled Self-Sabotage, the collection of songs has now been expanded to seven and will be released as is this what I look like? via UNFD on July 15.
The diversity within the songs on the EP sees Yours Truly expressing themselves like never before and marks a new dawn for the band into unchartered waters.
Coco Le Sex Bomb caught up with vocalist Mikaila Delgado to get more details, starting by asking if the heavier, darker material was a planned direction or if the songs more dictated the final result.
“A bit of both, really,” she answered. “The initial concept for this release was to be the B Sides and companion piece to Self Care, our album, which was very happy and very positive and very light. I think we always had that concept for it to be a bit darker, a bit heavier and to be the alternate side. As we started writing, it kind of turned into something that felt very natural to us. We’re all fans of heavy music – we definitely listen to heavier music than we write – so it was fun for us to explore something that we all have a combined interest in.”
