G’day folks, Rod here. Welcome to the new edition of ‘HEAVY Oz’, a regular column where I highlight five or so awesome Aussie bands that you may or may not have heard of, but need to check out now!

1. Tempest Rising
This blistering Perth based five piece thrash act have been around for four years and have released a full length album, toured Australia with the likes of Voyager, Chaos Divine, Frankenbok, Desecrator, King Parrot, Psycroptic, Caligula’s Horse and Breaking Orbit and also toured Japan with black metal legends Marduk and Carach Angren.

2. Phoenix Day
A Melbourne based five-piece, Phoenix Day present the accessible side of Aussie progressive and alternative rock, with their soaring and grandiose melodies and massive fat grooves. Check out their uplifting latest single Stronger for an inspirational experience. Full length release to follow.

3. Figures
Another Melbourne based alt-rock band with a massive future. Check out their brand new single Filter, which hits you between the eyes, but does so in a very radio-playable manner. The single will be launched on Friday the 23rd of September at Melbourne’s Evelyn Hotel, a gig that also boasts the incredible undercard of El Colosso, Acolyte and Crying Sirens. Can’t wait to hear more from this band.

4. The Helix Nebula
One for the tech freaks, this Sydney-based four-piece band smash out blistering progressive metal instrumentals at a millions notes per second. However, it’s not just about the sizzling instrumental dexterity, their compositions are cohesive and enthralling as well. They pull it off with great aplomb in a live setting too. Check out their EP Meridian, and apparently they have a full lengther on the way.

5. Osaka Punch
Hailing from Brissie, these guys take an idiosyncratic approach to modern alternative hard rock, injecting some funk and soul into their massive sound, and not taking themselves too seriously while they do it. They have just released a new single and video, and are touring the eastern seaboard in late September/early October.
