CARNIFEX ‘World War X’

Share This:

On the surface Carnifex’s seventh album World War X is a brilliant nine tracks of sheer aggression… some of the best deathcore that you are ever going to hear. Dig under the surface a little though and what you find here is an album that is lyrically smart while the band that has created it is at tight as they ever been.

Opening track ‘World War X’ promises exactly what is coming. The track opens with what sounds like the listener has been placed in a warzone and then the sheer brutality of Carnifex hits… and hits hard. It is very quickly obvious that everybody has brought their A-Game. Scott Ian Lewis brings some of the best vocals of his career while the guitars of Corey Adford and Jordan Lockrey are stunning. The piano adds another layer to an already amazing track.

The experimental side of Carnifex comes through on ‘Visions Of The End’. The drums, bass and guitar all seem to do their own thing which creates an effect that seems to give the track an epic edge that you don’t normally find with deathcore. The band then return to what worked on the opening track with ‘This Infernal Darkness’ as the brutal sound is again broken up with some beautiful sounding keys.

Lewis’ vocals as he screams “death saved me” on ‘Eyes of The Executioner’ makes in one of the best tracks on the album while the inclusion of Alissa White Gluz’s vocals on ‘No Light Shall Save Us’ gives it a heavenly side which needs to be heard to be believed. It makes you realise that there is not other deathcore band out there taking as many risks as Carnifex when it comes to exploring and furthering their sound.

The guitars seems to dominate ‘All Roads Lead To Hell’ which is fast-paced with stunning vocal wails while Lewis’ growls seem to go to a whole another level on both ‘Brushed By The Wings Of Demons’ and ‘Hail Hellfire.’ The album’s closing track, ‘By Shadows Thine Held’ is Shawn Cameron’s turn to shine as the drumming is insane.

Carnifex take a huge step forward with World War X. Every risk they take with their sound pays off and what they have delivered is a stunning deathcore album.
