Self-Released

The blurb says ‘inspired by Hans Zimmer, HIM and Nightwish’.

Couldn’t of said it better myself. – Lewd Scoff.

The opening track to Australian self-proclaimed symphonic-goth metal act Carmeria’s debut album Advenae boasts what sounds like 6 years in the making. Epic orchestral soundscapes that challenge the sonic capabilities of a fierce round of the orchestra pit. Operatic voicings, prime thunderous percussion and lush chordal passages.

Having already been released locally in 2021, the band are gearing up to present this long player to the North American market, and it sits well beside the likes of DreamTheatre, with its approachable gathering of metal and classical auditory delights.

Vocalist, Jordan Von Grae sits very comfortably in front of the mix, a sign of a truly magnificent singer with a wide range, from clear open throated warbling, to devilish growls.

The more I listen to the album, the more it grows on me, which is a good sign within this unique genre. It is a lush experience, from start to finish, a pleasure to the ears and best consumed with a good pair of headphones.

The band is very visually striking, and obviously enjoy the gothic side of their sound, which transfers to some impressive drip.

Track highlight for me is Relinquished, which, was the first single off the album, a smart move, as it outlays their overall sound and leaves the listener open to wanting to hear what else Carmeria have to offer.

Australian production has this quality of being both very lush yet very to the point, and Advenae is no exception. I’m kind of surprised that this is being self released by the band, and not on a major label, although in today’s modern music climate, I’m also not surprised.

I highly recommend this album if you like big metal sounds that are aggressive as well as reflective.

Best listened to whilst playing high energy video games in my opinion.
