Christian Tryhorn from Beats Cartel is one of the most passionate, dedicated, and genuine characters of the Australian music scene. As well as heading Beats Cartel, he also runs Gold Coast live music venue Mo’s Desert Clubhouse and welcomes bands of all genres and walks of life to his stage.

One of his many endeavours is the travelling Aftermath show, which showcases some of the best established and up and coming bands this country has to offer.

With the Sydney leg of the tour happening on Sunday, December 12 at the Factory Theatre, HEAVY sent Tryhorn a couple of questions to see what he has been up to.

HEAVY: The Aftermath series has dropped shows in every state of Australia in its first ever offering.  How has the series gone so far?

CT: The series has gone pretty well mate to be honest.  Especially considering the current stop/start climate.  We had to move a lot of the dates numerous times over the last 12 months but were pretty lucky in the delivery of most in the backend of this year.  Sold out shows in Adelaide and Melbourne with a good turnout in Hobart and Perth on the back of a Gyroscope headline.  QLD was a tough one as the series was based around a bunch of NSW bands originally who just couldn’t make it in, but looking forward to a large close out weekend in Wollongong, Sydney and Newcastle this weekend!

Why did you put on Aftermath to begin with, particularly in these trying times for promoters?

Aftermath was originally meant to be a bit of a filler in between our Covid-cancelled events Mojo Burning and Dead of Winter Festival.  Something to keep the scene pumping without the headache of major logistics or international tourers.  I can tell you that there were major admin headaches anyway haha.  Crazy couple of years… It’s super important to keep the underground scene linked nationally and thriving.  When I say underground I don’t mean ‘bands you’d find playing to 30 people down the local’ but actual touring acts who unfortunately don’t get the kudos or radio play they deserve in this country.  Beats Cartel has always been about the kickass bands who need a leg up with a view to conquering larger markets.  Aftermath was set up to encourage everyone to get back on the horse and have a heavy/good time!

You’ve got a big edition with 17 bands dropping this Sunday at The Factory in Sydney.  Great lineup!  Who are you most looking forward to on that one?

This Sydney Aftermath is one of the best bills we’ve assembled… period.  A who’s who of the local heavy scene in Sydney, it’s a belter!  I am actually rolling the dice and flying down from QLD for this one so make sure none of you southerners spray me with Covid!  Can’t wait for a big day catching up with Sydney pals.  Super excited to see Lo! close it out in what will be a visceral display.  My boys Astrodeath and Mountain Wizard Death Cult are new and rad pals who I’m keen to see deliver.  Bands like Rick Dangerous and Bare Bones never disappoint.  Can’t lose all day to be honest.  Zero clashes.  Non-stop action across 2 stages.

What’s happening with Dead of Winter and Mojo Burning festivals?

We’re looking to bring back both festivals in 2023 once borders are firm and international acts are greenlit to return.  The past few years have been amazing, and wanted to wait to make sure the offerings and capacities were at full strength.

What’s coming up for your agency Beats Cartel?

A good bloody sleep over Xmas!  Frothing for a break.  We’ll be kicking in a series of band tours and releases in the Feb to April window, have signed a couple of new acts which we’ll announce soon and are building up our Gold Coast venue Mo’s Desert Clubhouse which you know too well mate!  Cheers for the chat.

AFTERMATH will close out its national run of dates with a final NSW run this weekend, including:
