“We have kept true to our old themes”, explained Battle Beat vocalist Noora Louhimo of the band’s recently released album Bringer of Pain. “We have a couple of Berserk theme songs in there and then we have this fantasy world and also one from reality so I think we have kept these three main themes in the lyrics but we don’t have the lion fantasy world on this one. We have actually introduced a new one which is created by myself in the song ‘Bringer of Pain’. You will hear more about that story and how it is going to contribute later on in the album cycles but in the song you can hear a glimpse of the theme. It is a theme that I will continue to tell the story of throughout the next couple of albums.”

“I feel like this is fresh Battle Beast material,” she continued. “We have developed our sound and our music. With all of the feedback we have had so far it seems like we have done a pretty good job (laughs). Our first priority is always to do great music and music that we like first of all and then we hope the people like it too.”

Bringer of Pain marks new territory for Battle Beast in that it is their first album without founding member and guitarist/vocalist Anton Kabanen. Often losing a key member of a band proves insurmountable but according to Louhimo the band chose to take the positives out of a negative situation and in the process learn more about themselves and their abilities.

“Of course it was totally different,” she said of the process of writing and recording without Kabanen. “In the previous albums Anton wrote all of the songs and he didn’t want us to participate in any way. This time we got to do it more as a team and some of the songs were co – written and some of the songs were independently written by someone from the band. I think that’s made the album stronger and the whole band stronger. The atmosphere is better in the band and it also comes through with the music and songwriting.”

Louhimo herself is relatively new to the group, having taken over from original singer Nitte Valo when she left the band for family reasons in 2012.

While she agrees that she has always felt welcome as the frontwoman of the group, she also feels that after the release of this her third album at the helm that she has finally made the spot her own.

“I feel like I’ve earned my place and I’ve found my own style of doing things,” she said. “I feel very comfortable now. I feel like I know what I’m doing and this is the right place for me to be as an artist and performer.”

Stepping into the vocalist’s position is perhaps the most challenging assignment in music, with fans having become accustomed to a particular sound of their adopted band, and Louhimo admits that finding the right balance between keeping up with fan expectations and carving her own slice of Battle Beast immortality wasn’t easy at first.

“Of course I took some influences from Nitte as a vocalist,” she concurred, “and she was really helpful with that. When I was listening to her singing… the whole thing was they needed a singer who could do the same stuff as Nitte could do and to my advantage I’ve always been good at imitating sounds so the first thing when I was asked to join the band was I tried to deliver things that Nitte did and hopefully I developed my own style at the same time, combining the heavy metal style of my idols like Rob Halford, Bruce Dickenson, Ronnie James Dio and all these great singers that I have been listening to since I was a teenager and I could put all of these influences to use. Of course you can hear also in my style of singing all of my pop influences as well as blues and rock. I think it is good and I’m really pleased I can combine all the singing styles I have learned over the years with this band.”

As the only female member of a five-piece band, Louhimo says that having a large band and being surrounded by so many personalities is an interesting experience.

“It’s got its good and its bad points,” she laughed. “On one hand it’s great that we have so many talented people putting in their influences but on the other hand we have six different opinions so it can… of course we have fights and that is a normal thing in any family. I see the band as more of a family with a lot of brothers and one sister (laughs).”

This family bond is one of the binding factors of Battle Beast and gives Louhimo faith that the unity within the group can afford them the luxury of a long and sustained career.

“We just be true to ourselves,” she affirmed, “and do things the way that we like to do them. I think that is very important. We don’t try to mould ourselves to please others: I think that is the key rock and roll attitude.”
