If there’s one thing better than going to a metal festival, it’s chatting with the bands backstage before, during, or after their set. Backstage is where the magic happens, and it’s also where bands can be at their most vulnerable – and exciting…
HEAVY has just finished doing the rounds at Dead Of Winter Festival at the Mansfield Tavern, and one of the bands we caught up with was Mammal.
Mammal is an Australian funk-punk band formed in Melbourne in 2006. Fronted by entertaining and politically passionate vocalist Ezekiel Ox, the band earned cult status for their explosive, raw live shows. Their sound seamlessly blends aggressive heavy rock riffage with dancefloor-driven funk grooves.
Mammal‘s early career exploded with their self-titled EP and their 2008 debut studio album, The Majority, which spawned major Triple J radio hits like Smash the Piñata. Despite an acrimonious split in 2009, they successfully reformed in 2017. Mammal continues to thrive, releasing their second studio album, The Penny Drop, in 2024, alongside a refreshed lineup featuring Dave Bleus on guitar and Karnivool’s Jon Stockman on bass.
Check out our review to find out just how good they were on the night…
