You never know what to expect when listening to a new album for the first time. After checking out All Time Low’s promo’ I straight up got a little bit terrified I was about to get the Wiggles-style album. It was the coloured outfits that planted the seed I swear. I went in blind on this one, All Time Low haven’t been on my playlist for quite some time and I was eager to see what they are up to these days. I can safely report that I didn’t get Fruit Salad, more like 15 songs that are intimate, honest and quite moving. There is something for everyone on Everyone’s Talking.
After being greeted with the intro, [cold open], this little one minute acoustic number, which is a very gentle introduction into the album. I truly wasn’t sure if I was getting a whole album of chilled out acoustics, although, I was quickly snapped back into reality when I ticked over to the title track, Everyone’s Talking and the ball was well and truly rolling.
The film clip for SUCKERPUNCH is directed by Alex Gaskarth & Nick Stafford. It starts off with an old bloke sitting in a bar having a whiskey and a dart, (Aussie abbreviation for cigarette for those from not here), with words of wisdom filtering through the background:
‘You don’t gotta be everything to everyone, you just got to matter to someone. And, if you’re remembered, you are never really gone’
Then it rips into the song which is really upbeat, and honestly not the direction I thought it would go and each time I hear it, the more I love it. It’s got a wicked rock theme throughout it, sprinkled with their signature pop-punk sound. The hook is incredibly catchy and does it’s job well. Don’t say I didn’t warn you…
The Weather has a running drum beat throughout and that will always get me onboard. Their film clip has a retro 50’s diner ‘love’ storyline and theme. It’s a pop-punky dream and makes me feel juvenile again, in the best way.
Sugar (Ft. JoJo) Yes, JoJo! Not Jojo Siwa, wash your mouth out with soap! One of my best friends, Emma, will whip out JoJo’s hit song Too Little Too Late every time we’ve hit that sweet spot of vino’s – this cementing JoJo as a certified legend in our books. What a pleasant surprise and a great song; truly filling up my millennial heart. Sugar is lyrically beautiful and a song I will be circling back to.
Different Languages is a nice moment on the album. It slows you down, and connects all the pieces together. I can absolutely see myself adding this to my ‘Chill AF Sunday‘ playlist. The lyrics are quite heavy on the chest.
’Speaking Different Languages again. You were painting flowers, I was off in Neverland. It’s just like me to need to go against the grain. Stubborn as an August drought when all you need is rain.’
Even though it’s an autumn release for our American friends, this album is perfect for our summer drives with your windows down, singing every song nice and loud!
