[ALBUM REVIEW] STEEL PANTHER: Lower The Bar

Share This:

STEEL PANTER!!! You either get their style of humour and love them or you’re quick to dismiss them as a fad, and you loathe them. Either way, the only way to describe these guys are as ‘one of the hottest bands in the world right now’, and music fans everywhere are eagerly awaiting the release of their brand new album – Lower The Bar. After just one listen, I can proudly say… you aren’t going to be disappointed.

Lower The Bar comes to life with wailing guitars and Michael Starr’s high pitched screams and then dives into Goin’ In The Back Door which is heavily laced with Steel Panther’s down-and-dirty sexual innuendos that have served this band so well over the journey. That’s backed up with Anything Goes a track so catchy it will grab you by the balls with a cruel squirrel grip. The same could be said for the cover of Cheap Trick’s She’s Tight which closes out the album as well.

There does seem to be some hidden anger under the fun-loving lyrics of this album, though. Take a deeper listen to Poontang Boomerang, and there is certainly some aggression bubbling away just under the surface. Pussy Ain’t Free and Wasted Too Much Time also feature that same anger… the latter being a song that anyone that has ever been through a break-up can certainly relate to.

For the most part, though this is an album that sees Steel Panther do what they do best and that is make you laugh while you are listening to some great music. Only Steel Panther could deliver That’s When You Came In which features the lines ‘that’s when you came in and blew me’ while also referencing 18-year-old druggie strippers and other people’s spunk. That same type of hour is present on Now The Fun Starts which has early drawn out guitar chords that make it sound like it might be a missing track from the Rock Of Ages soundtrack, until the lyrics reference getting a blowjob from your boss’s wife. Then there’s I’ve Got What You Want which could be a track from KISS if it didn’t feature lines involving ‘menstrual cramps’.

Comedy aside though it’s tracks like the brilliant Walk Of Shame that remind us under all the innuendo, which in itself is some pretty amazing song-writing, is a band that really knows how to rock… and at the end of the day, that’s what you really want from a band like Steel Panther.

Lower The Bar is another notch in the Steel Panther belt. Funny lyrics and some great glam rock – the legend of Steel Panther is well and truly still alive.
