Alter Bridge - The Last Hero - Album Review

Review by Matt Barton

Is there a harder working frontman in music right now than Myles Kennedy? The man is constantly recording or touring with either Alter Bridge or Slash and as such it’s been three long years for Alter Bridge fans, but finally they return with album number five.

In our current world where true leaders are becoming harder and harder to find the title of the album “The Last Hero” and, aptly, the opening track Show Me A Leader play on this. “Show me a leader that won`t compromise – show me a leader so hope never dies,” Kennedy sings, summing up this messed up world we live in, in two short lines. This is a very politic and powerful track and one hell of a way to kick things off.

Guitarist Mark Tremonti did state this album would be darker and The Other Side, to me, seems like a song about terrorism and how these suicide bombers are playing God with other people’s lives. “If you believe yours is the only way then you’re the fool who lives to die. Well, you deserve the Hell, you’re gonna pay.” This is a song that will have a powerful effect on many people and it sends a very strong message. I urge you to give it a listen.

As fans of Alter Bridge have come to love – musically and vocally everything is on point here. Kennedy’s voice is as powerful and unique as ever. He really is the king of rock at the moment. And Tremonti’s guitar work is an absolute stand out; especially on tracks like Crows On A Wire and Losing Patience. Bar a couple of tracks, namely, You Will Be Remembered (a mellower sad song about remembering those who have passed), this album is hard-hitting heavy rock at its finest.

I could go on and on about most of the tracks on this album but take my word when I say just give it a listen. It’s one hell of a ride. It will most definitely feature in many a people’s top ten albums of the year. My only complaint is: at almost seventy minutes long the album is, perhaps, a tad long, but other than that the mighty Alter Bridge are back. This is a dynamic and compelling record. All we need next is an Australian tour to hear these tracks live!
