ALICE COOPER ‘Paranormal’

Share This:

Six years after his latest offering, America’s undisputed King Of Darkness, Alice Cooper, is back with his latest album: the two-disc record, Paranormal. The good news for Cooper fans from over the years is the second disc does see a mini-reunion with Cooper and his former band mates, as it contains two new songs from The Alice Cooper Band and six of their hits recorded live.

The other piece of good news is that Disc One shows that Cooper is still a legend at what he does, so much so that I was singing along to the album after just one listen. There simply isn’t a weak track to be found here. Instead, this is ten brilliant tracks that serve up something a little different each time around.

There are some tracks here that you fall in love with straight away. Title track “Paranormal” is an absolute gem with its traditional rock sound that builds momentum as it goes on. Lyrics like “like a spider web kiss on your face that is my scent I left on your lace” is classic Alice Cooper, and thankfully, he has never wanted to change that.

The rest of the album is a mixed bag that comes together delightfully well. The hard, driving rock beat of “Dead Flies” is further enhanced by Cooper’s sped up vocals. With its distorted vocals, “Fireball” has a real desert rock vibe, while both “Rats” and “Paranoiac Personality” have a ’80s vibe with a fresh newness to them. The latter also contains one of the catchiest choruses of 2017. Rivalling “Paranoiac Personality” for its catchiness is the bluesy rock-sounding, “Fallen In Love” that has the brilliant lyric: “I’ve fallen in love, and can’t get up.”

The country rock feel of “Dynamite Road” make it appear as if it were a modern day “The Devil Went Down To Georgia”. Whereas the two brand new Alice Cooper Band tracks – “Genuine American Girl” and “You And All Your Friends” – are catchy tracks that really make you hope the reunion is for good.

Paranormal shows that even though Cooper might be nearly fifty years into his career, he is still creating brilliant albums that hold his name right up there with the best in the business. A stunning album that makes me even more eager to see Cooper’s live show this year.
