Having spent the better part of the last two years battling a court case with their label Victory Records, A Day To Remember who up until recently had no idea if they’d even be able to release their new record Common Courtesy have been allowed to lay down their well-constructed mesh of pop-punk and metalcore to its fans.
Common Courtesy is a triumphant return from the guys who obviously had something to prove. It’s a vast improvement from its predecessor What Separates Me From You and sees the Ocala, FL-based quintet continuing to improve and should make this new release a fan favourite.
Throughout its 13 songs, vocalist Jeremy McKinnon chronicles the last three years of his band’s collective life. Actually the lyrics quite often reminisce on the band’s beginnings – from the opening “City of Ocala” to the closing “I Remember,” there isn’t a shortage of tour stories, memories of the band’s early years or directing plenty of vitriol at their record company.
ADTR certainly blur the lines between pop-punk and metal whilst combining their signature screams and melodic choruses that create something quite unique. The songs are strong and worthy of a spin even if you’re not a fan. Common Courtesy will certainly see ADTR be propelled to the next level of their career.
