Melbourne’s The Deep End returned home to the Cherry Bar last night in a homecoming fit for rock legends.
Supported by The Devilrock Four and Culzean who were also launching their debut self titled EP, their blistering set of dirty pub rock had the crowd whipped into a frenzy of high voltage fist pumping which they happily obliged to when prompted by lead vocalist Dale.
This was their 23rd show since launching their debut album Cop This in February and you’d be hard pressed to think that after so many days on the road promoting the release, that they would run out of some steam but The Deep End play live like every night is the first night of the tour.
Their songs are fun pub music, about women, beer and having a good time the way you’d expect a rock band born in the suburbs of Melbourne to be and last night’s effort had a mix of fan favourites like A Grade Woman and Just Waitin but it was when they played the tracks off the new album you heard the maturity in musicianship they have honed in their song writing, the stand out for me being the grooving intro to Midnight Sun. Of course if you’re a young Aussie pub band, you’re not going to play in AC/DC Lane without throwing one homage to the lanes namesake band, which was honoured by their super charged version of High Way To Hell.
When it was time to tell the crowd this Cheap Night Out was coming to an end with the apt song of the same title, their rapturous fans were not about to accept this and so the band gave them one more classic with Led Zeppelin’s Been A Long Time and I can guarantee you these lads don’t take a long time to rock n roll and with their fast growing legion of followers, they will never be lonely when they do either.
