Brisbane alternative rock rising stars Garden Eyes release their pensive debut EP, Selfish Art, a wistful reflection on the complexities of love, loss, mental health and self-worth.
Across the past year, Garden Eyes have steadily uncovered pieces of their debut, releasing five of the EP’s seven tracks ahead of today’s full release. Fever Dream, Speak Slow, Contest, Sunshine and Blur introduced the band’s emo-tinged alternative rock sound, drawing comparisons to Movements and The Story So Far while establishing Garden Eyes as a band unafraid to push beyond the genre’s familiar boundaries.
While firmly rooted in alternative and emo rock, Selfish Art is far from one-dimensional, weaving elements of indie, pop and spoken word throughout its seven tracks. Thematically the EP explores the messier side of human connection – Speak Slow captures the push and pull of imbalance, self-doubt and a self-destructive connection, Contest navigates the realities of loving someone struggling with depression, Sunshine pairs a brighter sonic palette with a poignant reflection on loss and grief and Blur dives into desperate hope and long-distance bonds. Together, the tracks paint an increasingly nuanced portrait of the complexities of companionship.
