Tromsø trio Ohmwork has recently released their latest album, Ex Nihilo. Across seven tracks, the band showcases a heavier, darker, and more direct side of themselves, building upon the distinct sound that has established Ohmwork as a prominent name in Norwegian heavy rock.
Ex Nihilo is an album built around the raw power of the power-trio format. Guitar, bass, and drums take center stage, supported by a consciously raw and direct production. Massive guitar riffs, heavy basslines, hard-hitting drums, and melodic vocal lines create an expression drawing inspiration from classic heavy rock, doom, and stoner rock, interwoven with hints of prog and a strong identity of its own.
The album marks a significant evolution in Ohmwork’s sound. Rather than expanding their sonic footprint through endless layering, the band took the opposite approach. Ex Nihilo lets the three core instruments and their dynamic interplay carry the songs. The result is a visceral, organic record where the riffs have room to breathe, the rhythm section drives the tracks forward relentlessly, and the guitar shifts seamlessly between walls of heavy sound, melodic passages, and explosive moments.
