Brunswick’s premier bubblegum-garage-rock’n’rollers Hanky Panky Social Club are back with a groovy, tongue-in-cheek anthem for the alter-ego in all of us. Their new single Mum’s Drunk serves as the first taste of their upcoming second EP and a loud-and-clear invitation to blow off some steam.
The track was sparked by a peculiar habit of a close friend. “Our mate Emily always says ‘Mum’s a little drunk’ or ‘Mum’s getting drunk tonight,’” explains singer/guitarist Rex Nonius. “It’s amusing hearing her talk about herself in the third person like ‘Mum’ is this chaotic alter-ego. It’s also funny because she’s not actually a mum! It seemed like too good an idea for a song to pass up.”
Marrying a 60s retro style with a modern polish, Mum’s Drunk is a prime example of the band’s self-described “bubblegum-garage” sound. It’s a high-energy blend of 3-part harmonies and driving grooves that make the three-piece sound twice their size.
The accompanying video clip captures the band in their natural habitat, featuring the trio strutting down Sydney Road, Brunswick, singing along and interacting with passersby before eventually ending up at The Retreat.
