Emerging from the long-shadowed hallways of Sweden’s heavy metal lineage is IN AETERNUM – a band that occupies a unique albeit austere boundary coalescing black metal and death metal into a form that is rigorously controlled yet somewhat ceremonial. The trio formed in 1994, at a moment of upheaval when Swedish death metal’s early excesses were beginning to ossify into canon, even as Norway’s black metal insurgency redefined extreme music as ideology rather than sound alone. Eschewing the comforts of nostalgia, IN AETERNUM instead embraced a colder discipline—one that invokes permanence over chaos and favors atmosphere as a governing principle rather than spectacle.
With …Of Death and Fire, Sweden’s IN AETERNUM have enacted a deliberate return to the black–death continuum they helped define in the early 1990s. After years of sustained activity (four full-length albums, multiple EPs, and extensive touring) the band entered a prolonged hibernation, allowing their identity to sediment rather than dissipate. They’ve reassembled with the same line-up that last recorded together two decades ago and have emerged as custodians of their own lineage – one that is sharpened by absence, disciplined by time, and resolutely uninterested in reinvention for its own sake.
Recorded under the banner of Soulseller Records, …Of Death and Fire is a work of continuity and conviction in the form of forty-three minutes of devotion to severity, atmosphere, and doctrinal restraint. Its’ compositions unfold with an almost liturgical patience that recalls death and black metal not as rebellion, but as inheritance. This is a record shaped by memory and intent, where death, fire, and darkness are not metaphors, but enduring principles—invoked, upheld, and left deliberately unresolved.
